Winter care starts before the first frost
Review the system and the species rather than treating every pond the same.
Adjust the routine
Track water temperature and appetite. Follow the food label’s cold-water guidance for koi. Sturgeon need their own feeding decisions; do not automatically stop feeding every fish because koi become less active.
Maintain the essentials
Check the filter, pipework and air system against the manufacturer’s winter instructions. Keep appropriate gas exchange and protect equipment from frost. Avoid sealing the pond beneath an airtight cover.
Observe safely
Do not strike ice over the fish. Plan a suitable way to maintain an opening where needed and seek advice for your pond depth and equipment. Monitor any heaters or de-icers carefully.
Do not mistake illness for the season
Persistent unusual posture, respiratory distress or a single deteriorating fish still needs assessment. Take temperature and water readings and contact a competent adviser.
Keep the seasonal setup clear
Record equipment changes, cover positions and your observation routine. Label controls that should remain on. Keep the relevant manuals available for anyone helping while you are away.
