pH: look for stability and context
A pH reading describes acidity or alkalinity. Its trend matters as well as the number.
Measure consistently
Follow the kit and record the time of day. Photosynthesis and other biological processes can affect readings across a day, so compare like with like before deciding something changed.
Read pH with KH
KH helps explain the water’s buffering capacity. An unexpectedly falling pH needs a look at alkalinity, the source water and the pond’s biological load. Testing only pH leaves part of the picture missing.
Avoid chasing a perfect number
Repeatedly adding pH-up and pH-down products can create instability. Confirm the reading and get pond-specific advice before chemical adjustment. Species needs and the water’s chemistry matter.
Ammonia adds urgency
The effect of ammonia changes with pH and temperature. If ammonia is present, do not casually raise pH while troubleshooting. Share the full test set with the person advising you.
Record the time of day
Write down when each sample was taken as well as the pH and KH results. Include whether the reading came from a meter or a colour-comparison kit. Keep a meter’s calibration record with your notes.
