CyHV-2: goldfish herpesvirus
Cyprinid herpesvirus 2 causes herpesviral haematopoietic necrosis in goldfish. It is not the same infection as koi herpesvirus.
Possible presentation
Ill goldfish may stop eating, have pale gills and develop abdominal fluid. These are nonspecific findings; a photograph or routine skin scrape does not confirm this infection.
Investigation
A vet may need laboratory tests on suitable samples. Contact the professional before sending fish or preserving tissue. Keep records of new arrivals and of affected and unaffected fish.
Protect other systems
Keep nets and water separate while the cause is investigated. Reassurance about KHV alone does not answer every goldfish-health question.
