Food & feeding

A feeding routine built around your fish

The right food is only part of the decision. Quantity, access and water conditions matter just as much.

Choose for the species

Use an appropriate complete diet and pellet size. Koi, sturgeon and fancy goldfish do not automatically share a suitable feed. Read the current label and ask what your chosen fish are already eating.

Observe the meal

Give manageable portions and watch every group get access. Remove uneaten food promptly; pellets remaining intact underwater does not mean they should be left there. Appetite and body condition matter more than a fixed scoop size.

Let conditions guide the routine

Follow the food’s temperature guidance and reduce or reassess feeding if appetite falls or water tests worsen. Gasping or distressed fish need attention before another meal.

Plan your purchases

Use Food HQ to estimate bag life from the daily ration you actually use, or a known biomass and the label’s feeding rate. A subscription interval should fit that routine and the food’s storage life, rather than encourage extra feeding.

Measure what you offer

Keep a weighed reference portion and note what the fish actually take. Record feed type, water temperature and changes in appetite. Food HQ turns your chosen daily ration into a bag-life and buying estimate.
