Tench and carp: plan for the fish beneath the surface
Bottom-oriented fish are still active animals with their own space and feeding needs.
Check the exact species
Golden tench, mirror carp and common carp are not all the same fish. Confirm the listing’s identity and adult requirements before making a mixed pond plan.
Do not buy a clean-up crew
These fish do not remove the need for mechanical cleaning, waste removal or testing. Feeding and stocking decisions should be based on their welfare, not the hope that they will maintain the pond for you.
Think about access
Provide safe swimming and turning space without sharp or trapping features. Check that every fish is receiving suitable food rather than assuming leftovers are enough.
Watch the whole community
A quieter fish may be harder to observe. Keep records of feeding and condition, and consider how you would inspect or safely move it if necessary. Ask us about a particular combination before ordering.
Include the fish you rarely see
Keep a record of the tench and carp already in the pond, even when they spend much of the day out of view. Include them when discussing new additions, feeding and equipment with the team.
