Buoyancy problems: beyond the “pea cure”
Floating or sinking can have several causes. Calling every balance problem “swim bladder” does not establish what is wrong.
Describe the pattern
Record whether the fish floats, sinks, rolls or struggles only after eating. Note whether it can still reach food and whether breathing is normal.
What a vet can investigate
An examination and sometimes imaging can distinguish problems involving the swim bladder, digestive tract or other internal structures. A diet change does not diagnose those problems.
Avoid improvised supports
Do not attach floats, weights or needles to the fish. Keep the environment accessible while obtaining veterinary advice for a persistent problem.
