Pond essentials
Depth, shelves and real water volume
A single deepest measurement can overstate the amount of water in a pond.
Use average water depth
Measure the filled depth across representative areas, allowing for slopes, shelves and irregular edges. Use the pond calculator as an approximation. A water meter during filling gives a better volume for future treatment calculations.
Plan for the species
Depth and footprint both matter. Deep narrow water is not equivalent to a wide swimming area. Provide adult turning space and avoid trapping routes around ornaments, sharp edges and pipes.
Keep temperatures steadier
Shallow water can change temperature quickly. Review sun, shade and winter exposure when planning. Covers and shelters must preserve ventilation and access, and should not create a hazard to fish or people.
Before altering an existing pond
Plan temporary accommodation, aeration and filtration before draining or rebuilding. Preserve stable conditions for the fish and get competent help for structural or electrical work.
Measure the water you actually have
Draw the pond with each shelf and a few depth measurements. Mark the normal waterline. Keep this sketch with your volume calculation so future changes to water level or layout are easy to account for.
