Clean the filter without undoing its work
Follow your filter’s maintenance instructions and clean according to the waste load, not just the calendar.
Mechanical cleaning
Empty settlement areas and clean screens, foams or brushes before flow is restricted. Inspect drains and valves for leaks when restarting. Arrange a safe route for dirty water that cannot run back into the pond.
Biological media
Do not sterilise all biological media as routine maintenance. For media that needs rinsing, follow its instructions and use suitably dechlorinated water or pond water. Avoid leaving it dry or stagnant during a lengthy clean.
After restarting
Confirm actual flow, air delivery and the return to the pond. Check that no bypass or drain valve was left in the wrong position. If cleaning was unusually extensive, monitor ammonia and nitrite closely afterwards.
A small maintenance log helps
Note what you cleaned and when, along with test results. If a problem appears two days later, those details are much more useful than trying to remember the order of events.
Make the next clean easier
Keep a short maintenance log: date, what was cleaned and any change in flow or water appearance afterwards. Photograph the normal valve positions so another keeper can restore the system correctly.
