Cycling a pond filter
The biological filter needs time and a suitable process to develop its waste-processing capacity.
What changes during cycling
Microorganisms convert ammonia into nitrite and then nitrate. Both of the first two can harm fish. A bottle of bacteria, a calendar date or clear water alone does not demonstrate a mature system.
Check the evidence
Follow a fishless cycling method appropriate to your filter and test kit, ideally with help from your retailer. Measure ammonia and nitrite rather than guessing. Never add household chemicals without a verified fishkeeping procedure and confirmed product purity.
When fish arrive
Add a small, considered group and monitor the response. Feeding and fish numbers both change the waste load. An established filter can still struggle after a big stock increase, medication, oxygen loss or aggressive cleaning.
If readings rise
Pause new purchases, reassess feeding and check aeration and filter operation. Use the water-testing and ammonia guides and seek help if fish are distressed.
Keep a cycling record
Record the fill date, test results, any dechlorinator or starter product used and the dates you added fish. Bring the sequence, not just the latest test, when asking for help with an immature filter.
