Mechanical and biological filtration

A filter has two different jobs: separating solids and supporting the biology that processes dissolved waste.

Keep the jobs distinct

Mechanical stages collect waste so you can remove it. Biological media supports microorganisms. Trapping dirt is only helpful if it is removed before it breaks down; a filter full of sludge is not a storage solution.

Read the right rating

Compare the manufacturer’s rating for your intended fish load, not simply the largest pond volume on the box. Koi systems often need more capacity than lightly stocked ornamental ponds. Check the stated maximum and minimum flow and installation method.

Allow room to maintain it

Plan drainage and access before buying. Routine cleaning should not require dismantling the pond edge. Keep aerated water moving through the biological stage as directed and protect the media during service.

Bring the details

For equipment advice, bring actual water volume, fish count and sizes, pump model, lift, pipe diameter and the existing filter specification. We can then work through what the setup needs.

Record the actual installation

Save the filter model, media, pump model and a photo of the installed pipework. Note how often maintenance is needed. These details help the team distinguish equipment selection from a flow or cleaning problem.
