KH: understanding your pond’s buffer
KH is a measure used to assess carbonate buffering. It helps put pH stability in context.
Why keep a record?
Biological processes can consume alkalinity. A pond with a heavy feeding load may not behave like its source water. Log KH alongside pH, especially through changes in feeding and rainfall.
Use the kit’s own units
Kits may report degrees of carbonate hardness or other concentration units. Do not compare bare numbers from different systems. Follow the drop-count method carefully and note the units in your log.
Before adding anything
Test source water and confirm the pond result. Discuss a low or falling reading with a specialist using your volume, species and ammonia result. Avoid copying a buffer dose from a pond with different conditions.
Keep adjustments deliberate
Any agreed change should be measured and checked. Stable water is the aim; repeatedly correcting an unverified result can cause more trouble than the original problem.
Avoid a unit mix-up
Copy the unit from the kit into your notes: drops, degrees or mg/L are not interchangeable labels. Keep the kit’s conversion instructions with the record and note what, if anything, has been added to the pond.
