Tetrahymena and lookalike ciliates
Tetrahymena can be found with detritus or dead tissue as well as on fish. Its presence needs interpretation.
Why context matters
It is a small, oval, moving ciliate. Finding similar organisms in old tank debris does not prove they caused a living fish’s illness. Fresh, correctly collected samples are more informative.
Ask for a sample review
Label where the material came from: fish mucus, water, debris or a dead fish. Do not assume every moving object is the treatment target.
A better question
Ask the examiner whether the finding explains the symptoms and what further tests are needed. Review hygiene and other causes of tissue damage.
