Carp pox: waxy lumps on koi
Carp pox is associated with cyprinid herpesvirus 1. It is distinct from KHV and does not justify a KHV diagnosis from a photograph.
What it can look like
Smooth, raised, wax-like patches on skin or fins may be seen. A different growth, injury or infection can look similar. Photograph changes and have unusual lesions assessed.
Living with a confirmed diagnosis
Visible lesions can vary with conditions; their disappearance does not prove the virus is gone. Avoid scraping off lumps or applying household products. Maintain stable husbandry and ask a fish vet about management.
When the picture changes
Breathing difficulty, ulcers, appetite loss or rapid deterioration should trigger a fresh assessment. Do not explain every new symptom with an old diagnosis.
