Choose a pump at its working flow
The number printed on a pump is usually not the flow you will get through your installed system.
Measure the route
Note vertical lift, pipe diameter, pipe length, bends, valves and equipment in the circuit. All affect the delivered flow. Use the manufacturer’s performance curve and installation guidance.
Match it to the filter
Too little flow may not circulate the pond well. Too much may exceed the filter or UV’s operating limits. Compare a desired turnover scenario with every component’s specifications before choosing the pump.
Make it serviceable
Use suitable isolation valves and unions. Fit the intended strainer or intake protection so fish cannot be trapped. Pond electrics need suitable protection and competent installation.
Plan for failure
Keep model numbers and replacement fittings recorded. Know how you would keep aeration running if the circulation pump stopped. A second water feature does not automatically provide independent backup.
Before comparing pump prices
Sketch your pipe route and record pipe diameter, vertical lift, bends and the equipment in the circuit. Keep the manufacturer’s flow curve with the quote so you can compare the proposed installations on the same basis.
