Koi & pond fish

Growth, size and realistic expectations

Growth varies between fish. A size today is not a promise of a size next summer.

What affects development

Genetics, age, health, food, temperature and living conditions all contribute. Increasing feeding beyond the system’s capacity can damage water quality rather than create a better fish.

Track without excessive handling

Keep occasional photographs and observations of body condition. Use measurements obtained during necessary handling rather than repeatedly netting fish solely to check growth.

Leave space in the system

Plan for adult swimming room and the increased waste produced as fish grow. Revisit stocking and filtration decisions before the pond becomes crowded.

Choose the fish you like now

Patterns can change as koi develop. Enjoy the character of the fish you choose and be cautious of guaranteed colour or growth predictions. The photo identifier explains visible clues; it does not forecast show quality.

Compare the same fish over time

Take dated photographs from a consistent angle with a safe size reference. Note approximate length, feed and any major change to the system. Your own record is more useful than expecting a particular fish to match somebody else’s growth rate.
