Buoyancy problems have several possible causes. A short video is helpful, but it cannot establish the diagnosis.

Check the surroundings

Test the water and assess temperature, flow and whether the fish can reach a calm area. Look for breathing changes, swelling, injury, appetite loss or signs affecting other fish.

Do not jump to a food diagnosis

Floating, sinking or rolling is not enough evidence to prescribe a treatment or a particular food remedy. Avoid repeated handling, squeezing the fish or adding a medication cocktail.

Seek help when it persists

Contact an aquatic vet or experienced fish-health professional if the fish cannot feed, is repeatedly distressed, deteriorates or has other concerning signs. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty or severe loss of balance.

Prepare a useful history

Include aquarium size, stocking, test results, temperature, diet, recent changes and how long the problem has been present. Keep the fish in stable, suitable conditions while getting advice.

Record the pattern before the appointment

Note when the problem occurs, whether it changes around feeding, and how long it lasts. A short video of swimming and a current water-test record can help a fish-health professional assess the next step.
