Oxygen: the pond’s daily essential

Fish, filter organisms and other pond life all use oxygen. Warm weather and heavy feeding can narrow the margin.

Look at the system

Use aeration suited to the pond, species and fish load, with sensible positioning and routine checks. A waterfall’s appearance alone cannot confirm the dissolved-oxygen level throughout a deep pond.

Be alert to sudden change

Fish gathering at an inlet, breathing rapidly or gasping need prompt attention. Increase safe aeration, check whether pumps have failed and obtain urgent advice. Water chemistry can also cause breathing problems; do not assume oxygen is the only cause.

Think beyond daytime

Plants and algae also respire. Conditions can worsen overnight, so daytime observations may miss a problem. Sturgeon and heavily stocked ponds need particular attention.

Have a backup

Keep a practical outage plan and consider a suitable independent air supply. Check air lines, diaphragms, non-return valves and electrical protection. Record unusual behaviour and water readings for whoever helps you.

Plan the backup

Write down which socket and circuit power the air pump, where spare parts are kept and who can help during an outage. Test the practical steps of your backup plan before you need it.
