Pearlscale Goldfish

(Carassius auratus)

Pearlscale goldfish are one of the easiest fancy goldfish to recognise. They have a short, rounded body covered in raised, pearl-like scales, giving them their unusual beaded appearance. They normally have a split double tail and a single dorsal fin, with colours and patterns varying from fish to fish. (Practical Fishkeeping)

They are peaceful, slow-moving fish and are best kept with other gentle fancy goldfish of a similar size. Avoid mixing them with common goldfish, comets or shubunkins, as these faster varieties can easily beat Pearlscales to food. A gentle current is also important, as their compact body shape makes swimming against powerful filtration more difficult. (Ornamental Fish)

Pearlscales can grow to around 20cm and need far more room than their small shop size suggests. For adult fancy goldfish, OATA recommends at least 100 litres for the first fish, with another 50 litres for each additional fish. The aquarium must be fully cycled, well filtered and properly oxygenated. Ammonia and nitrite should remain at zero, with regular testing and partial water changes used to keep conditions stable. (Ornamental Fish)

Use smooth ornaments and avoid sharp rocks, rough plastic plants or anything the fish could scrape against. The raised scales can be damaged by rough handling or unsuitable décor. Although a lost scale may grow back, it will usually return flatter and without the original pearl-shaped centre. (Practical Fishkeeping)

Feed a good-quality sinking fancy-goldfish pellet or gel food in small amounts. Their diet can be varied with suitable vegetables and occasional frozen foods such as daphnia or brine shrimp. Avoid overfeeding, and avoid relying on floating food, as short-bodied fancy goldfish can swallow excess air while feeding at the surface, which may contribute to buoyancy problems. Pearlscales are coldwater fish, so a heater is not normally needed in a comfortably heated home. However, they do best with a stable temperature and should not be exposed to sudden changes, draughts or extreme cold. With clean water, enough space and the correct diet, fancy goldfish can live for many years. (Ornamental Fish)

Please note: every Pearlscale has its own colour, pattern and body shape. Photographs are examples of the fish available, and the exact fish supplied may vary.
