What To Feed Your Fish
Feeding your fish isn’t just about keeping them alive — the right food helps them grow, stay colourful, and live long, healthy lives. Here’s a simple guide on what to feed koi, goldfish, and pond fish, plus what to look for on food labels.
🐟 Koi Carp
- In warm months, use a high-protein pellet (35–40% protein) to boost growth and colour.
- In cooler water, switch to wheatgerm-based food that’s easier to digest.
- Look for ingredients like fish meal, shrimp meal, spirulina, wheatgerm, and krill for strong colour and healthy digestion.
🐠 Goldfish & Fancy Goldfish
- Fancies do best on sinking pellets (floating food can upset their swim bladders).
- Add blanched peas, spinach, or courgette a few times a week for variety.
- Look for balanced foods with 20–30% protein, vitamin C, and natural colour enhancers like spirulina.
🌊 Pond Fish (Comets, Shubunkins, Orfe, Tench, Grass Carp)
- A good pond stick or mixed pellet works well.
- In summer, they’ll also graze on algae and plants.
- For grass carp, offer additional greens like lettuce or spinach.
🦈 Sturgeon & Sterlets
- These need specialist sinking sturgeon pellets — never feed floating koi food, as they can’t digest it properly.
- Choose foods high in protein and oil for steady growth and energy.
- Feed little and often to avoid waste building up on the pond floor.
💡 Tips for All Fish
- Feed 2–3 times daily in warm months, only what they finish in 3–5 minutes.
- In winter (below 8–10°C), reduce feeding — or stop completely if they become inactive.
- Store food in a cool, dry place; old or damp food quickly loses nutrition.
