Assorted Oranda Goldfish
(Carassius auratus)
Assorted Orandas are one of the most popular fancy goldfish varieties, known for their deep, rounded bodies, flowing double tails and the distinctive fleshy head growth known as a wen. The wen usually becomes more noticeable as the fish matures, so younger Orandas may have very little visible head growth when first purchased.
Because these are sold as assorted Orandas, colours and patterns will vary from fish to fish. You may see solid orange, orange and white, calico, red cap and other mixed colour combinations. Body shape, tail length and head growth will also vary naturally between individuals.
Orandas are peaceful, fairly slow-moving fish and are best kept with other gentle fancy goldfish of a similar size. Avoid mixing them with common goldfish, comets or shubunkins, as these faster fish can easily outcompete them at feeding time.
They need a mature, fully cycled aquarium with strong filtration, good oxygenation and plenty of open swimming space. As a guide, allow around 100 litres for the first fancy goldfish, followed by approximately 50 litres for each additional fish. Ammonia and nitrite should remain at zero, with regular partial water changes used to keep nitrate under control and maintain stable water quality.
Feed a good-quality sinking fancy goldfish pellet or gel food in small portions. Their diet can be varied with suitable vegetables and occasional frozen foods such as daphnia or brine shrimp. Sinking foods are usually preferable because they reduce the amount of air swallowed while feeding at the surface.
Use smooth decorations and avoid sharp rocks, rough ornaments or hard plastic plants that could damage their fins or wen. Orandas can grow to around 20cm, sometimes larger, and with proper care can live for well over ten years.
